Gardening Activities For February 2025

Constant rain has been the hallmark of February, ending a dry spell with much-needed energy. These daily showers have refreshed a thirsty landscape worn out by a prolonged drought. However, this heavy rain also brings problems; weeds and pests like slugs, snails, and stubborn fungal infections are becoming serious threats to vulnerable plants. Managing these pests is challenging due to the continuous rain that weakens pesticides. Still, there’s a positive aspect—this downpour might finally eliminate those annoying whitefly infestations that thrived in the drought.

What to do

Picking and discarding diseased fruits is your first step to preventing the spreading of fungal diseases. Choose dry days to apply neem oil with a curative fungicide—avoid preventive options since the plants are already infected. Biologic pest control may be ideal if they are available. Alternate use of different antifungal formulations to ensure effectiveness by preventing the development of resistance is advisable. Adding a wetter to your spray solution to improve results. Inspect the orchard for scale insects and mealybugs hidden on the new stems and leaves. Also, support should be used on trees that might be uprooted due to overly wet soil—these trees will lean at awkward angles before toppling over.

What to avoid

Avoid taking cuttings or making air layers from fungus-infected plants, as the disease can spread. Consequently, the cuttings and air layers may not be taken, yet the branches can still get infected and die. If branches break off, cover the wounds with a suitable plant sealant or petroleum jelly to protect the plant.
