Fig trees are well adapted for the subtropics. They grow as trees and shrubs, with maximum sizes ranging from very large to small dwarf varieties. The fruits are sweetest in hot, dry weather when most fruit trees struggle to stay productive. The flavour, colour, growth rate, number of crops per year and size of the fig depend on the plant variety. They are relatively low maintenance, although plants may need protection from thieving birds. The productivity and flavour of figs improve with time, like most fruit trees.
Plant in pots or the ground, avoiding underground plumbing and foundations. They are productive in full sun and partial shade, the latter being best in summer. If the plant bears fruits continuously or is potted, add compost thrice yearly or four times. Water once or twice weekly. Figs are an excellent addition to the kitchen and garden.
