Elderberries in Summer 2024

Elderberry plants have shown impressive resilience this year. We hard-pruned the trees to manage their size and facilitate the collection of propagation materials. We also repotted the larger trees and pruned the roots of those in the biggest pots. Initially, those interventions halted flowering and reduced fruit yields in the year’s first quarter. The interventions have since set the stage for a robust recovery. As summer arrives, the elderberry plants are thriving and poised to flourish in the hot, humid conditions. The newly propagated plants, transplanted this past winter, are thriving remarkably well. At the same time, numerous mature plants are adorned with flowers. At the same time, their fruits develop beautifully at various stages of formation and ripening.

The elderberry plants enhance the beauty of our landscape and provide ample shade with minimal maintenance and water requirements. These resilient, drought-hardy plants boast impressive pest resistance, though they can attract white flies if neighbouring plants are infested. Fortunately, these flies do not impact their vigour or productivity. We continue to transplant the newly propagated plants. We also await the products of the hybrid varieties created from the three thriving imported commercial varieties that flourish in our Subtropical Urban Eden. Elderberries are among the many berries that deliver rich flavours and essential nutrients for people, insects, and birds alike.
