Summer Gardening Activities

Summer brings heat and the rapid growth of plants. Dormant plants continue to come out of dormancy, and despite drought and water shortages, gardens and orchards will flourish. Citrus, grape, and stone fruit yields may surpass those of the last few years. We’ll also have a wider variety of vegetables ready for harvest, while herb plants will grow quickly, and herbs and seeds will dry more easily. We have finished collecting cuttings for rooting, but it’s essential to avoid trimming fruit trees during this season to prevent a significant decrease in fruit yields.

Challenges That Come with Summer

Unfortunately, pest control will be more challenging as pests replicate quickly while feeding on new shoots. Vigilance and preventive measures are essential this season. Birds will be attacking soft fruits due to scarce food sources from the drought. Protecting fruits from birds may be necessary. Weed control becomes more challenging as weeds grow and seed rapidly. Weeding the garden sections weekly may help. Plants will need more water and nutrients as their demands increase. This season, we aim to keep the plants alive and thriving as we await the rainy season. We continue to add composted manure and recycle grey water from the kitchen. The warm weather allows kids to use homemade outdoor bath tabs, helping us utilize the water for our lawns.
