Prickly pear (Opuntia humifusa) plant

Prickly pear is a drought tolerant plant that thrives in full sun and drought conditions. The newer varieties are less thorny, allowing for a safer harvest of fruits and leaf pads. The leaf pads can be used to feed livestock and to create security hedges around the property perimeter. The fruits are popularly called Dolofia by children in Zambia. However, the pads may be too coarse for human consumption. You can check out the edible cactus Nopales if you want a variety for eating the leaves, not the fruits. Another great addition to the subtropical garden is its drought and pest resistance. These plants literally grow themselves.
