This year, our winter temperatures were lower than last year, but the winter seemed to end abruptly. Daytime temperatures were warm, especially indoors. Root plants near the stove germinated and were ready for planting in July and early August. Keeping the root seeds in cooler places, such as a garage, can prolong their viability before germination or rot.
The sweet potatoes, Jerusalem artichoke, garlic, and horseradish planted in polybags are doing well. They require additional soil as the tubers grow. We will plant the galangal, ginger, and turmeric rhizomes this month.
