Growing Grapes in 2024
Growing grapes has been a rewarding endeavour in our Subtropical Urban Eden. The lack of horizontal space has not hampered the growth of multiple grape varieties. Although grapes are not commonly grown in Zambia, some varieties thrive with minimal space by letting them grow vertically. Despite the drought in the last two years, the grape vines produce at least two crops yearly. The sweetness and bunch size increase as the vines age. The drought reduced the incidence of mildew. However, the lack of dormancy due to persistent high temperatures requires more frequent acidic compost to four or five times annually from 3 times. We continue to propagate more high-performance grape varieties. The gallery shows the grapes and grape vines in 2024.
