Setting Up a Chipku Bactocera Dorsalis Fruit Fly Trap

Fruit flies are the leading cause of fruit rot worldwide. Several types of fruit flies exist. Each type attacks different kinds of fruits and melons/cucumbers. The Chipku fruit fly trap is useful for surveillance and protection against fruit flies that cause fruits to have maggots and rot in mangos, guavas, pomegranates, and peaches.

1. Remove the fruit fly lure from the packet. Wear gloves or plastic on your hands when handling. If you prefer not to do so wash your hands before handling food.

Fruit fly trap — 2. Pass the black flexible wire through the hole in the lure block and twist the end to secure it in place.

Fruit fly trap — 3. Take the yellow container, remove the cover (if covered), and place it with the opening facing up.

Fruit fly trap — 4. Push the other end of the flexible wire that is tied to the lure block into the hole from the inside, pushing out.

Fruit fly trap — 5. Pull the wire until the lure bloc is at the top of the yellow container. Secure the wire by twisting the end so it does not slip back into the hole.

Fruit fly trap — 6. Cover the yellow container with the transparent lid.

Fruit fly trap — 7. Hang the end of the wire that is outside the container onto a tree branch where it is visible but in a semi-shade. Avoid places that are hidden or too shady.

Fruit fly trap — 8. Place 6 to 8 traps per acre for surveillance. If the traps are empty after some days, add 10ml of water through the hole on the side of the yellow container to ensure the pests are not escaping by trapping them in water. The trapped fruit flies are at the transparent end (bottom).

Fruit fly trap — • If more than 6-8 fruit flies are caught in the trap, then the problem is severe, and 12-15 traps per acre are used for mass trapping.

No bees or beneficial insects will be trapped or harmed. Check the traps monthly and empty them of fruit flies by opening and replacing the lid. Replace the pheromone lure after two months. The traps may be used with other pheromone lure types using lure blocks or liquid bait.
