Which fig variety is best?

The different fig varieties have their growth pattern, crop density, fruit size and colour. The fig varieties with an open ostiole (opening) will be less likely to let in water and spoil if the rains are erratic. The hot, dry weather also makes it easier for the figs to dry on the trees. We have created a gallery of a few fig varieties showing their growth patterns to help you decide which types may be more suitable for your garden or orchard spaces.

Summer figs are a memorable treat.

The best figs could make a mother pretend they haven’t seen their child longingly looking at them to share. A toddler will wail when no more ripe fruits can be plucked from the tree. Walking through the garden, seeking out the best figs and sharing them is an act of affection. If you have a fig tree and your better half willingly gives you the other half of a praiseworthy fig, they care for you in the presence of temptation ;). To enhance their flavour, remember to stop watering the fig trees two to three days before harvesting.
