Seasonal Strategies for Successful Plant Propagation

Field Observations and Adjustments

Adapting to Seasonal Challenges

As we exit winter and step into our dry summer, our approach to plant propagation has naturally evolved. Consequently, this change responds to shifting weather patterns. Through careful observation and ongoing experimentation, we have refined our techniques for the colder months and, in turn, prepared for the approaching dry summer.

Successes in Cuttings and Grafting

We have moved away from traditional methods. By adapting to the unpredictable rhythm of the seasons, we have achieved encouraging results. For example, grafted apple trees and a variety of cuttings are now thriving. Their shoots are elongating into robust stems. Although some cuttings have yet to produce visible shoots, many still appear viable. This delay is expected, as new growth often begins when the mother plant emerges from dormancy. Therefore, patience, above all, remains our most valuable ally.

Experimenting with Rooting Formulations

Meanwhile, our exploration of home-made rooting formulas has provided fascinating insights. The liquid formulation, for instance, seems to favour softwood cuttings. This outcome may be due to a lower concentration of rooting factors caused by poor solubility. On the other hand, our powder formulation accelerates rooting in hard and semi-hardwood cuttings. Notably, softwood specimens also show promise. So far, our outcomes have surpassed last year’s shooting and rooting rates, which were affected by fluctuating temperatures and drought.

Embracing Local Resources

Given these results, we have decided to prioritise our powder formulation. Importantly, we use as many locally sourced raw materials as possible. At the same time, we continue to compare these results with those from imported rooting products. This ongoing comparison deepens our understanding of what truly supports vigorous plant growth.

Looking Ahead

Ultimately, each experiment and adjustment brings us closer to mastering plant propagation during winter and the sudden transition into dry summer. By merging adaptability, innovation, and a commitment to sustainability, we continue to transform challenges into new opportunities for growth and resilience.
