Nopales are thin edible cactus pads used in Mexican dishes. The skin is scraped off before preparation. The pads may be baked, grilled or stir-fried. Due to its drought and pest resistance, it is an excellent addition to the subtropical garden. They produce beautiful small fruits with bright red flowers that attract bees and make the garden vibrant. The leaf pads can be consumed or rooted for planting. They are harvested just before delivery or collection. This is a spineless variety but handle it with care or with gloves in case of micro spines that may prick the skin.
