Pheromone Water Traps: Quick Guide

🎯 Purpose

Pheromone water traps help prevent and monitor moth infestations by attracting pests with specific lures. Moths land on the water-filled basin and drown, reducing their population and reproductive cycle.

🐛 Target Pests

  • Tuta absoluta – affects tomatoes and other Solanum plants (e.g., pepino); damages leaves and fruits
  • Diamondback moth – affects Brassica crops (e.g., cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower); causes holes in leaves, leaving veins intact

🌱 Susceptible Crops

  • Brassicas: cabbage, broccoli, bok choy, cauliflower, horseradish, kohlrabi, turnips, rutabaga. Etc.
  • Solanums: tomatoes, pepino

⚙️ Trap Components

📍 Placement Guidelines

  • Use 4–6 traps per acre for general monitoring
  • Increase to 6–10 traps per acre if more than five moths are caught per trap
  • If moth numbers continue rising, consider spraying crops

🧼 Maintenance Tips

  • Refill the basin after a few days if hot or windy weather causes the water to evaporate.
  • Replace lures every 45 days (6 weeks) (follow product instructions)
  • Remove and discard infested leaves or fruits before trap setup, especially for perennial crops
  • Monitor trap catches to guide pest control decisions
