Growing avocado trees in urban gardens

Avocado trees are popular for urban gardens with large spaces, as they grow into sizable trees with a broad canopy, providing shade, wood, and surplus fruits for sale. Yet, while they’re undoubtedly useful, traditional larger seed-grown varieties won’t work well for smaller spaces. Variants that require cross-pollination necessitate at least two trees to be planted, and they often need climbing to harvest the fruit, increasing the risk of falling accidents and fruit bruising. The tree’s beauty is often underappreciated, as it takes a backseat to functionality. The avocado blossoms attract bees in spring and summer, pollinating the flowers.

About Hass avocado

The Hass avocado is an excellent option for growing avocados in small backyards. It is less likely to develop alternate bearing. Our grafted tree is just an eighth of the size of regular avocado trees in the neighbourhood. It doesn’t take up much space and provides shade for plants that need semi-shade or shady conditions. You only need one tree because it’s self-fertile and produces a lot of fruit. The fruit is firm and stays on the tree for up to three months. You can only ripen the fruit after picking it and storing it in a cool, dry place. If you wait too long to harvest them, the seed will start to grow, and the flesh won’t be as rich, but you can still eat it.

Advantages of Hass avocado

The Hass avocado is the most popular commercial avocado variety. The fruits are smaller, have easy-to-remove seeds, and bear heavier weight than the competitive Fuerte variety. One avocado is consumed in one sitting, making it ideal for when refrigeration and storage are not possible. The skin is green and bumpy when unripe, turning purple-black when ripe. The ripe fruits have a relatively long half-life. The seed is easy to remove. Our last crop lasted long enough for the tree to set a new crop. The smooth, rich flavour is derived from a higher fat content than other varieties, with plenty of unsaturated fatty acids that are healthier and useful for mobilizing cholesterol in the body.

Hass avocado's adaptability to less ideal climate

In 2023, we faced many challenges, but our tree stayed strong through it all. Even with flash floods early in the year, frost winter nights, warm winter days, and hot, dry summers with drought, our mature tree produced an excellent crop despite losing some flowers. The problematic weather helped by removing extra flowers so the tree could focus on producing high-quality fruit. Our Hass avocado tree was exceptional this year. Our Hass is a favourite fruit tree and one of the best-performing in 2023.
