Harvesting Hass Avocado

In September, we finish harvesting our Hass avocados, which stay on the tree until they are picked. Bees help with pollination, while the tree produces small fruits. If the fruits are left for too long, the seeds will start to germinate, reducing the fruit quality. As a result, the tree focuses on flowering and growing new crops.

Tips On Harvesting Hass Avocados

To avoid spoiling the avocados, handle the harvesting carefully to prevent bruising, which can lead to poor ripening. A fruit picker with a pouch or basket is recommended to avoid damaging the fruit or climbing the tree, which can be challenging, especially for large avocado trees. The smaller size of the Hass avocado tree makes it easier and safer to pick and handle the fruits.

Storing And Ripening Hass Avocados

We finished harvesting avocados for the year and will let the tree focus on the next crop. The harvested fruits will ripen indoors in cardboard boxes, taking only a week or two due to the warmer summer temperatures compared to a month during winter. It’s best not to squeeze the fruits to check ripeness, as this can cause damage similar to that from the fruits falling to the ground.
