Winter has both positive and negative aspects. It’s not just about the cold and dust. Here’s a list of the pros and cons of winter gardening.
Plant Factors
Pest control is more manageable when bugs are less active and replicate more slowly in low temperatures.
The trees have fewer leaves, allowing sprays to penetrate the canopy and eliminate well-hidden pests such as white flies on the underside of the leaves.
Low temperatures and leaf fall decrease transpiration, leading to longer intervals between plant watering and lower maintenance costs.
Physical Activities
Physical activities keep us warm for a long time after we are done with gardening activities.
Gardening involves complex body movements that tone the entire body and burn more fat due to the extra calories required to maintain body heat, resulting in a fitter body during this season.
The cold allows for longer work hours by preventing as much fatigue as in hot weather.
Outdoor activities like gardening uplift our mood and enhance our surroundings.
Harvesting Fruits and Wood
Winter fruits such as citruses provide food and vitamins to help us deal with stress and exposure to the elements.
The garden can supply wood for warmth and the remaining ashes for soil amendments/termite control.
Precautions For Winter
Keep your skin moisturised to avoid peeling, darkening of scars and sunburn. Don’t forget to wear a hat or head scarf to shield your hair from dust and dry winds, and use eyeglasses to prevent foreign particles from getting into your eyes. Lastly, enjoy the delightful harvest of fresh fruits and vegetables this season.
