Adaptation to Drought-Prone Climates
Many plants in our drought-prone climate need special traits to survive. Because the seasons are long and dry, resilience is key. The Kiowa blackberry is a great example. Not only does it thrive in these tough conditions, but it also produces giant fruits for much of the year. As a result, it stands out among other berry plants.
Impressive Strengths and Root System
However, these vines are more than just productive. They are thorny and tough, which makes them quite formidable. Furthermore, their multiple roots are massive and allow them to reach deep underground. While other plants may struggle, Kiowa blackberries draw moisture from depths others cannot. Consequently, the root-to-stem ratio is at least one to one.
Growing Requirements and Tips
If you grow Kiowa blackberries, you will need more space. Because their roots spread so far, they require larger pots than other varieties. When we repotted one plant after its pot broke, we saw this first-hand. We had to trim the roots to prevent them from strangling each other. Even though the thorns make handling tricky, Kiowa blackberry remains the fastest growing and most prolific variety for us.
