Peach Harvesting and Tree Care
Summer is a period dedicated to cultivating the orchard and appreciating the results of the efforts invested during winter, emphasizing that agriculture is not confined to the rainy season. Winter constitutes one of our most active periods due to the pruning of our stone fruits and grapevines. We persist in applying soil amendments, mulching, and ensuring the trees receive deep watering at least once a fortnight. We intend to replace the fruit fly lure over the weekend.
Variations In the Timing Of Fruit Sets
This year, we have observed a more pronounced disparity between the fruiting stages of various peach and nectarine cultivars. The late-season peach varieties remain dormant, while the mid-season varieties are still more than a month away from maturation. As one variety concludes its harvest phase, another begins to ripen. The variations in the timing of fruit sets have resulted from fluctuations in winter temperatures, accompanied by unseasonably warm days. Fortunately, peaches are self-fertile, allowing them to set fruit without requiring synchronous flowering.
Prolonged Harvest Period
This year, our harvesting period for peaches and nectarines may be prolonged by several weeks, which is advantageous given the expense of refrigeration amid the current power crisis. Collecting modest amounts of peaches at a time constitutes an additional benefit for the domestic consumption of these delectable, crunchy stone fruits.
