Spring is upon us, and all the grape varieties emerge from dormancy. They should have all been pruned in winter. However, the breakthrough warm days made the early varieties start fruiting in winter. We had to prune them without going fully dormant. Some branches had some small grape brunches already developing. It was necessary for the sake of getting larger crops in summer. The early season grapes are already ripening. Check the fruits weekly as they ripen quickly in hot weather. The midseason grapes are growing well and are expected to ripen in a few weeks.

While the late-season grape varieties are leafing up and flowering. The threats for this season include flower and fruit drop. Ensure adequate watering. Fungal diseases, especially when the vines are not trimmed. Some prolific varieties may need a slight trim of excessively fast-growing branches that may not carry any fruits. Also, pluck off small branches that may form at the vine’s base after a hard pruning. Remember to ensure the support is free from termites and strong enough to hold the crops.
