Giant Granadilla Vine Pruning

Pawpaw Dilla, or giant granadilla, is the largest type of granadilla fruit, found in the tropical Americas. It grows from seeds or cuttings and needs support for its heavy fruits. The fruits are sweet and fleshy. They thrive in well-drained, organic-rich soil and should be watered once weekly until established.

Growing Giant Grandilla in Drought-Prone Areas

Our giant granadilla was planted as a cutting 5 years ago. There has been little rainfall during its growth. The vine grew slowly at first but has since grown faster. However, the plant faced stress during the drought and is prone to mealy bugs and nutrient issues. Many flowers dropped, leading to fewer fruits. We pruned the vine in January. In addition, we removed the dead branches and leaves trapped between the branches, which help the sunlight and rain reach the mid-level and ground plants.

Effects of Pruning and Good Weather

The heavy pruning revived the plants under the giant granadilla vine. The intervention improved air circulation and reduced fungal infections and mealy bug issues of the vine. Furthermore, more rainfall could reach the ground. The vine is thriving and flowering well. The combination of humid weather, soil improvements, and pruning enhanced the health and yield of the giant granadilla vine. Regular pruning of trees and vines has been beneficial for our garden.
