Giant 3.134 Kg Grapefruit Harvested from Our Small Potted Tree

Last week, we picked a giant grapefruit from our small potted tree. Even though the tree is young, it produced a few out‑of‑season flowers, and one blossom grew into an impressive fruit.

How Our Tiny Tree Produced a 67 cm Giant Grapefruit

The grapefruit reached 3.134 kg and measured 67 cm around. For comparison, the largest grapefruit on record weighed 3.588 kg and measured 73 cm around. Our fruit came very close, only 458 g lighter than the world record. That small gap encouraged us to weigh and measure more of our unusually large fruits.

The Lemon‑Like Flavour of Our Massive Citrus

The grapefruit tastes bright and sour, much closer to a lemon. Yet it lacks the usual bitterness found in most grapefruits. Because of that, we planted seedlings from last season’s fruits. We hope to discover a fun orange–grapefruit or lemon–grapefruit hybrid. We will add the new seeds from this giant fruit after we collect the juice for a lemon dressing.

Growing Hybrid Citrus Seedlings at Home

We enjoy experimenting with citrus seedlings each season. These new seeds may produce interesting flavours or unusual fruit sizes. Each planting adds a little excitement to our home garden.

Why We’re Now Tracking Our Oversized Harvests

This grapefruit inspired us to measure more of our large fruits. It came from a tiny tree, yet it carries huge personality and joy. Moments like this keep our gardening journey fun and rewarding.
