Gentle Winter: A Guide to Thriving Subtropical Gardens

Seasonal Overview

June signals the start of winter; however, our winters remain gentle. While evenings can be quite chilly, daytime temperatures are surprisingly warm. Consequently, this unique climate often causes temperate trees to flower asynchronously, sometimes even within the same tree. As a result, fruits and blossoms develop at varying stages of maturity.

Flourishing Vegetation

Meanwhile, mild winters encourage tropical plants and vegetables to thrive. Transplanted fruit, herb, spice, and vegetable plants have rebounded well. Furthermore, root crops like ginger, galangal, and turmeric are now easier to harvest. In addition, amaranthus, hibiscus, collards, kale, and salad trees continue to grow robustly.

Fruit and Flavour Highlights

In terms of fruit production, pawpaws are ripening at a steady pace with reduced spoilage, thanks to the lower temperatures. Moreover, citrus fruits shine this season, offering their best flavour and colour due to the contrast between cooler nights and warmer days. As a result, this abundance ensures an ample supply of vitamin C and dietary fibre.

Thriving Coffee Plants

Equally important, our coffee plants flourish in this balanced microclimate. The ripening berries, in turn, bring vibrant colour to the garden, enhancing its charm.
