Citrus Trees in August: A Season of Transition and Abundance

From Blossoms to Harvest, and Beyond

August ushers in a dynamic phase in the citrus calendar—where blossoms greet harvest, and attentive care sets the stage for future abundance. Here is what’s thriving and what needs attention this season.

Blossoms & Emerging Fruits

To begin with, citrus trees are alive with fragrant blossoms and clusters of small, developing fruits. This floral resurgence signals the onset of the next fruiting cycle, even as the final harvests of the current season are underway.

Final Harvests: Oranges, Lemons, Limes & More

Meanwhile, this month brings the last opportunity to gather mature citrus. Specifically, oranges, lemons, limes, kumquats, and calamondins are ready for picking. Their vibrant colours and concentrated flavours, consequently, reflect months of dedicated care.

Watering & Nutrient Support

Furthermore, to sustain both flowering and fruit development, citrus trees require increased hydration and nourishment. For this reason, deep watering—40 litres per tree once weekly, unless drip irrigation is in use—is essential. Additionally, apply composted manure or a balanced citrus fertiliser to enrich the soil and support fruit set.

Maintenance & Structural Support

Additionally, healthy trees require a clean and stable environment. Therefore, it is essential to weed regularly around the base to minimise competition for nutrients. Moreover, installing branch supports will prevent breakage under the weight of fruit-laden limbs.

Looking Ahead: Yield & Thinning

Looking forward, the second half of the year is expected to yield a generous citrus harvest. For larger fruits, such as those on orange and pomelo trees, fruit thinning may become necessary to ensure optimal size, quality, and overall tree health.

August’s Citrus Gallery

To conclude, we celebrate the season’s beauty and bounty with a visual showcase of blossoming trees, harvested fruits, and the labour behind each citrus gem.
