Bananas: Improving Shelf Life

Bananas In Hot Humid Weather

Banana productivity surged with the rains, but those downpours are few and far between, hitting hard when they do. Yet, in the sweltering heat and oppressive humidity that follow the storms, the bananas are maturing and ripening rapidly. Larger quantities of ripening banana bunches may create challenges in finding space for ripening and keeping ripe bananas from spoiling. Improving banana shelf life is essential to maximise increased productivity.

Banana Storage and Ripening

Stacking banana bunches upright by their stalks or tips in aerated boxes lets you defy pressure damage! Thereby minimising bruising and significantly extending their shelf life. Additionally, strategically positioning these boxes in the coldest room to decelerate the ripening process perfectly aligns with market demand or consumption. The mature banana bunches ripen two to three days post-harvest, making timing crucial. Orinoco bananas remain the most prolific variety this year. We continue our quest to unlock their full potential.

In conclusion, banana production thrives despite challenging weather conditions, as timely rains boost growth. Efficient storage techniques help prolong shelf life, ensuring high-quality bananas reach consumers, while the prolific Orinoco variety paves the way for an optimistic future.
